Mission Maker for 2007/08

Posted on June 30th, 2007 in Project by jjakes

We have recently installed Mission Maker at the CLC and Hornsey School for Girls have already piloted the software with some of their students. The girls worked very well and enjoyed using the package, they created a number of games which we will make available from the CLC website shortly. The experience of this project has encouraged us to run several Mission Maker projects next year. Woodside High School is interested in participating so we are now looking for another four schools to join in the next project.

Outline of the project:

1 days training for one or two teachers from each of the schools to familiarise them with the software and look nat the issues for planning the project.

1 day in the centre per school working with support to teach the students how to use the software.

(Students then return to school with the planning sheets to design their game.)

2 weeks later the students attend again for 2 days to create their game.

The project is suitable for students from year 6 to 13. It could be used by Design Technology or ICT departments to deliver the Control aspects of the NC or as an exercise to devleop high end thinking skills for G&T students. The project is ideal for groups of approx 12 students on the first occassion, whilst the teahcer skills are being built up and then larger groups can participate.

Navigating a Game

Posted on April 16th, 2007 in MissionMaker by jjakes

There are various ways to move around the environment you have created and you’ll find the
one that suits you best during the day.
1. You can use the arrow keys (or WASD) to move forwards, backwards, left and right; and the
right mouse button to orientate up and down.
2. You can also press down on the middle scroll button and use your mouse to navigate around
the environment driving forward as you go.
3. Alternatively, you might like to use a combination of the two. The scroll button to zoom
around and the arrow keys and right button to refine your position.

You can only move backwards with the down arrow.
In addition there are some hidden tricks – features of an incomplete interface.

To crouch click Ctrl (good when you get stuck in a corner)
 To run press Shift

To jump click the Space Bar.

Enjoy………

MissionMaker is now at Haringey City Learning Centre. In order to find out more about the software click here. Before you start planning your games play one or two of the demo games and leave comments on the blogs about your experience of playing the game. I have included a post asking for ideas about what you think makes a good game and would welcome your comments. You can download a MissionMaker Player which will enable you to play the demo games on your computers at home (click here). The games can also be found on this page. Remember you will be able to play the games but not change them.
